Could somebody share the view of 'NING' from a 10,000 ft perspective?
Are all NING sites hosted by one central mothership or are NING sites standalone entities with some giant cross referencing table that connects member particulars from other NING site enrollments?
With all the spiders and 'bots that crawl over regular forum applications (like V bulletin), its seems like NING may be far more centralized. I am just all the more reminded about how internet searches can return obscure, specific details from our musings and passions from years gone by. I did a search on a word that was a username I had in 2003-2004 and was surprised to find the posts from a V Bulletin site that the search engine returned.
Can somebody share the basic things a NING user should understand about NING's information exchange and locations of servers or databases?
Hi David, yes, I think all are controlled from one place. I know that they employ people in Palo Alto in San Francisco. I run two sites using Ning and I think they're great! Hope this helps.
So a NING site is like a specific, compartment-able web presence that has its roots all the way back up to a Main singular "MySpace" kind of thing.
I wonder if this particular site did NOT allow spiders to crawl over it, but the 'mothership' does, would the search engines still be able to cross reference our posting to our using names?
I would presume so, but I think control over that would be by Ning themselves as it's on their interface.
I was on another site previously and any post you placed was immediately on the server, but if you tried to claim a blog etc - a la Technorati - they (the site owners) placed a no follow so spiders wouldn't. It might be an idea to cantact Ning direct and ask the question, they're very approachable.
Great questions. Yes we do utilize the Ning Platform...so this site is hosted by Ning on their servers.
As with any website any non-private part of the site could be indexed by google or any of the other search engines. The exception to this would be private groups as they require a user to login. Since the search engine bots can't login to our system they don't have access to the content within private groups.
You should be aware with anything you post online these days (on a website or via email) that it basically lives forever on the web...even if you delete it. Google and other sites make copies (cache) pretty much everything online.
This isn't anything to worry about...its just something that its good to be aware of.
Also, your ning login (email and password) will work on any site powered by ning. But your profile information that is specific to this site is not accessible via other ning sites and doesn't automatically transfer if you join another Ning powered site.
Hope this helps...its great to have you here. Please let me know if you have any other questions or if I can serve you in any way.
Jon,
many thanks for your service to house to house fellowship among members of God's anointed body.
I had one additional curious thing that I would appreciate you clarifying: why does the status of my page change from my access via my home computer and my access via my work computer?
Do the two different IP's end up creating two different realities in the 'NING' world?
thanks again for your replies and your service to others.
