I am interested in starting a group here on simplechurch for people interested in the vegan / organic / low-impact / sustainable lifestyle. Before I do, I want to see if there is enough interest. How many of us are there? What are you interested in sharing. . . recipes, energy savers, scriptures on ecology, faith / body connections, simple living, etc.

My husband just declared us a vegetarian household. (I've been veg before, and I have dairy sensitivity.) We enjoy local hiking and nature photography. We are recycle (and freecycle.org) fanatics. I do not belive you have to worship Mother Earth to be the good steward that God intended.

OK, I have one comment from Jaimee, on my profile. Anyone else?
I am definitely here with you. I can share TONS of recipes. My passion is feeding people healthful, delicious food and watching them enjoy it (especially when it comes to my skeptical hubby and 4 kiddos!). I am vegan by necessity (health issues), but also practicality, finances, etc. I am very into simple living, frugality... Would love to participate in an intentional Christian community someday. We also love to hike and camp and enjoy getting out of the city to see God's creation.
We made a switch a couple years ago from a standard American diet to a mainly vegetarian diet. I will occassionally cook chicken (free range, organic), fish (from sustainable sources) and rarely beef (organic). We belong to a CSA - Community Supported Agriculture. I have been cooking more vegan meals as my family but my teens are revolting :(.

I am very interested in being a good steward of the earth that has been given to us and would love to participate in discussions pertaining to the topics you've mentioned.
OK, we're up. If I did it right, I left the access open to group members to add whatever. I'll moderate the content as long as we keep it wide open. I'm praying the Holy Spirit sends in whoever needs to be there to share whatever gifts they have.

I can't wait to see what y'all have. Join "Green for God!"
Hi, I have been set on 4+ acres in New Caney, TX. My desire for years has been to live self-sufficiently on a small parcel of land. I find my one main drawback is that I am only one person and as I progress in getting to a maintainable point something sideswipes me and I get set-back. (like a hurricane that takes out the barn)(small stuff) I get overwhelmed etc. as a single stroke engine....on overtime :)

Any way - I am not vegan, I eat chicken, turkey and fish - love sushi. Beef at times. My children are grown but I still cook for many as we (the assembly in New Caney) meet here and I have a Martha streak in me that loves to feed people. Dishes like apple pie and peach cobbler - We love garden salads - that include every item that can be grown in the garden.

Raising chickens, turkey and goat on this property along with fruit trees and vegetable and herb gardens are the focus here. Sharing the gardens and livestock with others willing to put in to intentional communal self sufficiency is an idea that has just been sparked when I read Jaimee's reply (thanks Jaimee).

So, even though I'm not vegan, organic or the healthiest meal planner (guess I could use your help) will you accept me into your group?
Hey Bethel and Jaime! We will accept anyone into our group!!! (I think we only have 3 people so far!) Go to "groups" and find "Green for God". Sorry I didn't see this sooner. I haven't been posting a ton this past week. See you soon!
And please start whatever topic you want to discuss, we'll jump in. You've caught my attention with the words, "self-sufficiently."
See you over in GROUPS!
Sometimes, one of the things that I think people kind of forget about when going "green" is cleaning supplies. Up here in AK all of our septic/waste water goes right into the ocean, no waste treatment centers up here. When I realized that, I went to using biodegradable dish soap. I have natural house cleaning recipes to try here (got out of a CA paper when I was visiting relatives down south). If you're like me and have asthma with those special cleaners and the fumes...try some of these alternative and "green" solutions, or have children with special needs or health problems.  These products will also be cheaper than the store bought versions.

Shower Cleaner (makes soft scrub)
Baking soda
Dish soap
Water
1 to 2 spoonful baking soda
Squirt dish soap
Little water until pasty

Drain Cleaner
Vinegar and baking soda
3 cups baking soda with one or two cups vinegar. Watch it frizzle, after a while, rinse with hot water.
Bleach substitute:
Hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach in clothes (an ounce)

All purpose cleaner
(for floors, walls bathrooms)
Plain white vinegar, dish soap, water, essential oils (optional)
? vinegar, ? water, squirt or spoon dish soap

Another all purpose cleaner is, but not as "green" as the other cleaners:
1 part rubbing alcohol
1 part amonia
1 part water
Mix in spraybottle and use accordingly - excellent for kitchen area/greasy stove.

Kitchen Counter Spray
Hydrogen peroxide in spray bottle
Sink, counter or cutting board cleaner

Plain white vinegar in spray bottle

Laundry Cleaner
Baking soda, hydrogen peroxide
1 to 2 cups baking soda in wash.
Use 1 cup or less of hydrogen peroxide for whites and colors

Antibacterial Hand soap
Diluted dish soap and germ killing tea tree oil (check online) or lavender essential oil
Fill recycled hand soap bottle with diluted dish soap, tea tree oil or lavender essential oil.
Hey Ginny! Would you mind posting this over in the Green For God Group section? We've been needing some new topics started over there and I would love to join in on this one! Just go to GROUPS and GREEN FOR GOD.

Thanks Jaimee, I missed seeing Ginny's post. I just found the "close discussion" options, so this will be the last post here. Everyone is invited to Green for God to continue the dialogue. http://www.simplechurch.com/group/greenforgod
