Permalink Reply by Tim Nixon on June 1, 2010 at 1:29pm My name is Alan Knox. I'm originally from Alabama, and I've also lived in the Atlanta, Ga area. My family has lived in the Wake Forest, NC area for the last six years. We currently live in Youngsville, NC, just north of Raleigh.
I'm married. My wife and I grew up together in a small town - we met in the fourth grade. We've been married for almost 20 years (this January!). We have two children - a 14 yr old son and an 11 yr old daughter. We also have two dogs, and we keep foster dogs for the local humane society.
I work as a web developer and an adjunct professor of Greek and Computers. I'm a PhD student at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. I came to accept a "simple" understanding of the church through my study of Scriputre. My family is part of a "hybrid" church, that includes many aspects of "simple church". I publish a blog at www.alanknox.net.

I wanted to let you know that my children and I believe there is one God whose name is Jehovah, one Lord, Jesus, who died for us, resurrected and now is on the right hand of the father. One Spirit, the Holy Spirit of God. One faith and one baptism. Besides that our only guide is the word of God which is useful for teaching, correcting, rebuking and training in righteousness so that man reaches the fullness of a perfect man to the heights of God in Christ Jesus. We believe the church is the body of Christ and that their growth depends on building and sharing among its members as this is fed through the rich supply between the joints. We further believe that the church is first local and then universal and that his name is given by the locality where the saints meet Christ. That the apostolic office is current and that the Holy Spirit is manifested through the gifts. We are also confident that the end was near, that this is the time and now the true worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.
We want to wholeheartedly share with the brothers of the church. We've been all this time relying on our helper, understanding that it is He who builds his church. We need contact with the brothers in North Carolina. This is our number (305) -834 to 6098.
Receive a hug and the blessing of God.

My name is Sherry Powell. I am a lifelong resident of Thomasville NC. I am married to Travis Powell and I have 4 children and 1 grandson. I am a hairstylist and my husband sub-contracts to Piedmont Natural Gas. My daughter is a CNA who works with disabled children. Two sons work for Food Lion and my youngest son is in high school.
In 2010 I began to go through something spiritual I could not explain. We where attending an IC and was very much involved with the ministry there. But one day nothing seemed to satisfy me. Not the worship, the preaching, nor the prayer. I became saddened and was asking God for answers. At one point I thought I had "backslidden". Then one day the Lord spoke to me "You are discontent".....WHAT! Oh no!! That is really bad!! Then He said "You are spiritual discontent" OH NO, EVEN WORSE!!...But then He said.... "No, it is not necessarily a bad thing, it's what you do from this point on". What do you mean? Then He said, " You have a choice to make. You can stay where you are at and become complacent, stagnet, and ineffective or you can come up here (I later learn that was my way of thinking...for His thoughts are higher) and let me show you things you do not know"..... Well, Jesus take me up cause I want to be where you are!!!
Over the next few months my eyes where opened to the IC way and the religiousity. And I was sick of it all but did not know what do I do? One day while I was journaling this is what I wrote... What if church really looked something like this: It is a place for people to gather together to fellowship, to learn, to be 'discipled', etc and then there is a larger gather sometimes for these smaller groups to come and worship the Lord? What if? Then I wrote...that does not exist! (LOL) Well, the Lord led me to the book To Transform a City, which led me to Missional Communities, which led to Pagan Christianity, which led to The Rabbit and The Elephant which led me to simple, organic, church. WOW! What a journey.
We started having a meal with a family from our IC, discussing what God was up too. Praise God they are with us today! Then another family and another. We are just beginning to see how this whole simple church can function but still lack some freedom. Cause, as you may know, we are out of our comfort zones of control and spoon-feeding. But by the guiding of the Holy Spirit we are having revelation and freedom is happening!!! Others in our area are seeing the truth of the early church and seeking a simpler expression.
Most of what I find on here is what we are feeling and going through ourselves. Most of the church family we had cut us off before they knew what God was doing in our lifes and our friends and family do not even know who we really are... they never ask us what is God doing yet they condemn us for not being a part of a 'church'.... "forsake not the assembling"! It is refreshing to have people like you all that totally get us. :)
I am excited to be connected to you and look forward to the great things God is doing!! I would like to experience community life with some of the groups out there and see how Jesus is expressing Himself through your fellowships!
While sharing my journey I had two thoughts:
One- What are you all doing with the children?
Two- What if we had a large worship gathering in NC with those of us who find simple church to be the way?
Thanks and Shalom!
