Meeting in the ashes

Here is a story I heard last week from a fellow Ecuadorian church planter who works in a neighboring region of our Guayas province here in Ecuador.

After training, Luisa was eager to get started. She had no where to go, and did not know where to start. After praying she was led to a tree. Her first gathering consisted of herself and two other girls. Luisa was ecstatic. She was on her way to becoming a church planter!

Two weeks later, the tree was cut down by…

"It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast"--THE ORIGIN OF A LOT OUR TROUBLE TODAY!

I often wonder how we have managed to stray so far from New Testament practice and yet think we are being Biblical in our way of doing things. We are able to justify just about everything we do and back it up with a string of…

Scripture...as we live it

Alan Knox, who got my vote for best blog in 2009, has just completed his 100th "Scripture...As We Live It". I love this series of posts where Alan quotes well known Bible verses as we live them, rather than by what is actually said.

Some of my favorites are:

What then, brothers? When you come… Continue

Definition of Church

One of my favorite lessons in training new house church workers is when

we get into trying to define what a New Testament church actually looks

like. I'll get to our own Biblical definition in a minute, but first...

People come with all kinds of understandings and baggage about what a

church is and what it is to look like. Back in the early years of our

church planting, our team debated for months as to what we thought a NT

church was supposed to be.… Continue

Can any believer baptize?

One of the issues continuing to resurface again and again in our church planting is whether or not individual believers (disciples) can baptize those whom they have led to Christ. The vast majority of evangelicals in Ecuador hold to the notion that only recognized (ordained) pastors, and missionaries are authorized to perform baptisms.

Was this Jesus intent when he gave us the Great Commission?

Were his commands to go,… Continue

Thanks. It was an awesome reply. Sure dependent on Papa, aren't we?! It could pertain to my work here in ABQ also. I think I'll share it with my friends here as well, as I prepare for S.A. I'll call when I get a chance, but I'll email you first.
Thanks again.

Thank you for the encouragement, Guy. It has been a gradual unfolding for me over the past 2 or 3 years that has brought such joy and life to me. Our website has more on the gospel poverty concept at www.gospelpoverty.com. It also puts it in context.

I thank you for your input into us as an example of true, missional, kingdom living.

Joy,
Joseph

I believe I was thinking, "I hope I look cool in this picture so I can post it online so everybody can see...or maybe I was praying over the city?"
