I think it is more important to unite ourselves to basic Christianity, than to stand on our own soap box. That's why I'm here. I still have my own soap box, but together I think we accomplish so much more. The principles we can share respectfully ar…

In Memory of Nilson Fanini (1932-2009)

Recently learned of the passing of Nilson Fanini, an outstanding Brazilian Baptist Pastor in the Rio de Janeiro area. He was called the "Billy Graham of Brazil", partly because he served as the interpreter when Billy came to Brazil for a evangelistic campaign and partly because in his own right, he was an outstanding evangelist himself.

He not only greatly impacted the churches in Brazil but also around the world serving as President of the Baptist World Alliance. He died while visiting… Continue

How do you observe the Last Supper?

So many things happened that last evening with the disciples. On the very night in which our Lord was betrayed and drug off to the authorities like a common criminal. A new commandment and a new observance were among the most precious things we have recorded for us that evening. The "Upper Room Discourse" recorded only by the Apostle John has always been one my favorite passages of all the Bible.

The center of everything is the supper and the words Jesus spoke to his disciples

The Best of Christmas Music

This time of year I am amazed more and more how much of the Gospel is heard publically in our American society. That is my main criteria for 'best' regarding the Christmas music. Does it carry the Biblical message of the Gospel? And I have to say that down through the years the conviction has grown that the all-time standard was set with Handel's Messiah. The Libretto portion of Messiah is all Scripture and was put together in such a way that is true to the Biblical narrative; in its entirety it… Continue

Words from The Fire

A New Book about "Hearing the Voice of God in the Ten Commandments".

Al Mohler, President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, has written a book that I've been waiting for for a long, long time. In my opinion, it just may be the best book in our generation on the Ten Commandments. Imagine my great delight when I began reading and realized that Mohler was committed to seeing these famous Biblical words from the Old Testament from the perspective of the New Testament; f… Continue

A gift for SimpleChurch on Labor Day

Meditating on the Prayer Book of the Bible

I was lamenting a low point in my experience with the SBC yesterday. It was the Lifeway Sunday School material that is used by a majority of churches in the Convention and the Adult material for the fall quarter on Psalms. The first lesson on Psalm 19 had what only could be called "The Great Omission". Christ, the hero of the Biblical narrative, was completely left out! He was not only left out of the student's manual, but also of the teacher's… Continue

Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you liked the video. I recently discovered that my 5th great grandmother was Native American, and now I understand my own pinings, and yearn to understand the ancient culture, especially that described in the Book of Mormon, when the people were pure and righteous.

Friends,
One glaring difference between ministers in the institutional church in Africa and the West is that in the West the clergy receives formal training in seminaries but here someone simply wakes up one morning and claims whatever title they admire, with most claiming “pastor”. A good number don't have an elaborate formal education, therefore understanding of scripture is sometimes misplaced. To this group belongs the less educated and poorest Africans mainly dwelling in slums of urban areas and rural places.
Last evening, over 30 pastors heeded my invitation at the hotel foyer, and we had a rather heated time together. I chose to use the Corinthian Elders written by Jack Fortenberry because it seeks to address the clergy. We all agreed that there's a problem in the church; that something is not quite right. Indeed this is true because they had attended the National repentance crusade. But things went sour when I read “If we say we're not able to teach one another we deny God's Spirit in us-1John 2:27.” (pg.30). They were not amused when the book, concerning teachers, read, “This favoritism in the assembly may reveal a lack of interest in the brother seated in the pew behind us...”. Our meeting ended with 13 only pastors, who exchanged contacts with me, and I shall be visiting their homes soon. The seed has been planted, glory be to God, for He shall bring the rain to water the fields.

Hi Brother John,
Last night I tried sending you a comment on my computer but it seems not to accept comments to friends any more. I don't know where the problem is.
I just want to appreciate your extended hand in friendship, and remind you that this is what Christ is all about, that we may abound in fellowship one with another and welcome Him in our midst. I like friends because they've shaped my person. God has used these weak beings to bless my life, to dry a tear when am weeping and to stand with me. Yet others have grossly disappointed me. But in life I've learned that we need two types friends- Jonathan and Judas Iscariot because they both take us to the new level.
Now John, I very much hope you're NOT inviting me as your friend just for formality as many do; because simplechurch has this provision. Going through your page, I sense a serious man in you; a family man; a brother full of prayer and love for others. I dont know, Brother, why you chose to be my friend; but am glad you did. welcome home to fellowship! Let's join hands and sing to Zion.
Blessings and love I send.
Brother Jimmy.

Hi brother John Paul,

On my blog [ http://www.simplechurch.com/profiles/blogs/is-simple-church-the-christian ] you commented:

...the one thing that must be kept central here at Simple Church-the organic nature of the essence of the Church as the Body of Christ-Christ in you the hope of glory.

Yes, keeping Christ central is key...I agree. But many throughout history have sought to do that very thing and yet failed for lack of perspective. In keeping something central (in this case, Christ) we need reference points within our "peripheral vision." It is like lining up a target in a rifle sight. No matter what people say, it is not as simple as just focusing on Christ because there are other variables in this Christian walk. Anyway, one of those variables, one of the "cross hairs" that aids us in keeping Christ central, is Church history. Thank you for affirming my contribution, my warning against "philosophical faddism." Also, thank you for acknowledging on another post the need we Christians have to acquire greater perspective in biblical interpretation via recognising the cultural backdrop, the "Jewish Roots," so to speak, of our one Bible.

Shalom from Manila,
--Michael

David was granted a two-week leave to come home and be with his son, Ben, as he is inducted today at Auburn University into the Navy ROTC program. Thank you to all who have prayed for David and his ministry at Camp Bucca in Iraq. Praise and humble gratitude to His continued mercy and grace.

Hello, John Paul. Bless you today. Of course we always appreciate and enjoy the posts that you share with us, videos and all. I don't have the time to come here very often anymore, but Father encouraged me to write today; so I posted a piece and stopped by to say hello to a few friends. What a great tool the internet and this site is! Let's continue to occupy until He comes.

Blessings,
Marion

Glad you enjoyed the video. I actually don't normally listen to rap music, but there is something about seeing the redemption of Christ hit a culture in a place that has normally been very dark that really captivates me. I'm not sure John Piper is aware of Lecrae, but there are a several hip-hop artists (of which Lecrae is one) who are obviously very aware of him. Praise the Lord for beauty of His grace that shines through, even if the style is very different than our own.
