Meditation: Being an Anomaly

In a recent email exchange, a friend made the comment that he viewed himself as sort of an anomaly, to which I responded “you are an anomaly!” (I didn’t put an exclamation point on it in the email, but I did in my mind. It was such a perfect word.)

But since my response was meant to be an encouragement, I thought I’d best look up the word in the dictionary before hitting “send”. Though my first reaction to the word was positive, when I worked in systems design an anomaly was never a good thing.… Continue

Thanks to you Truth Tellers!

Here's a reflection I published on my blog today (alternativechurch.wordpress.com).

A few weeks ago I was discussing with my mother what I appreciated about the teaching style of a pastor friend of mine, which led to a discussion of how two people can say basically the same thing, but with one it's just words, but the other there is life because there is depth behind the words. To this my mother asked, pondering, "What do you think it… Continue

Community Making

Hello SimpleChurch.com community! Not been hanging out here quite so much of late, but just posted a new entry to my blog reviewing the 1987 book The Different Drum by M. Scott Peck, which I only recently read. The review is pretty detailed and has a lot of food for thought about the psychology of building community. I think Peck presents a very interesting framework for communit… Continue

Organic

Originally posted to my blog "Alternative Church". It's just a little bit of my own journey.

I grew up in the counter-culture - hippies, communal houses, civil rights marches, anti-war demonstrations, and yes organic gardening. When I was about 5 or 6, our family moved to a big farm in the country to seek intentional community, and to get back-to-nature. (All these years later, I still love the song "Woodstock" by Crosby Stills Nash an… Continue

GREAT Idea!

I just ran across this social networking site tonight as I was reading the blog of one of the commenters on my blog AlternativeChurch.wordpress.com. I have long been feeling that the Christian community really has not fully tapped the whole soical networking venue, and it's exciting to see us coming out of our boxes, and thinking creatively.

I have a separate blog (noted above), so probably won't be blogging too much here, but did want to write a qu… Continue

Loneliness

Lately I’ve been reflecting on the root causes of loneliness, and have realized that, for me at least, loneliness is caused by feeling myself to be alone in my thoughts.  The thoughts may be ideas, hopes, dreams, plans, aspirations, or revelations.   When I realize that those around me are either unable or unwilling to [...]

Love Practically: Loving the Real Person

“Love… rejoices with the truth…” (1 Cor 13:6) I cannot love the way God loves until I fully see and embrace the other.  I cannot fully embrace the other without embracing those things that make him or her fully human, including the free will of the other.  When I struggle against the free will in another, [...]

Love Practically: Friendship

About a year or so ago, I was visiting a community of faith in my city.  When in the course of conversation it became obvious I was looking for a regular group to fellowship with, one of the leaders there asked me, “So, are you looking for a church?”  For some reason, the question bothered [...]

thanks for this thought provoking entry. I too have been meditating on love quite a bit lately. Wrote a long email to some friends with some meditations about it which I think will eventually make it in some form to my blog. Plus revisited an articl…

hello maggie!
I am just amazed how God has been transforming His people to go back to the basic of christianity-intimacy with God! it's a joy to know people just like you who make christianity as lifestyle.

Maggie-
You give such solid interpersonal reflection. I am inviting you to share that gift in the new group "Through the Valley." We plan to support each other through seasons of loss and grief with an integration of healthy biblical perpsective and knowledge of social science, social work, counseling.
Thanks-

Hi Maggie. Recommending Jon Zens' book like I did is quite rare for me. I rarely if ever recommend books that highly.

btw/ I read your little piece on "organic" ... not sure if you are aware of my new book "REIMAGINING CHURCH: Pursuing the Dream of Organic Christianity," but if not, I think you would appreciate it given what you wrote.

Blessings,
Frank

Hi Maggie, I really enjoyed your thought on 'organic' and your ideas on the creative process in your personal blog- too cool! Glad you're here and I'll keep an eye open for your posts- big smiles from one natural-born artsy-hippie-chick to another!

No, maggie, I don't believe we have ever met or conversed in the past. I am a male in my 60's living here in Wichita the past 18 years; before that 15 years in nearby Hutchinson, Ks and about 12 years in California prior to that.
"MercyMe" is simply a handle I use to show gratitude for having stumbled upon Forgiveness thru Christ's sacrifice--many sins overlooked, am grateful every day.
Grace, Mercy, & Peace to you as well.

I can hardly wait to hear how it all went....I am pretty pooped today as well. I came home yesterday to find fire trucks and ambulance and Washington Gas at my house. Seems that Mike was trying to remove a fencepost and broke a little gas line that ran right along the fence! I slept pretty fitfully myself. We are not having church "Meeting" on Sunday as Mike and Toby will be out of town. Want to drop our new place if you're in town??
