"Just Bend"

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was standing in our church building during our Saturday night prayer time when my friend Von came up behind me and simply said, "bend, you just have to bend." That simple word foreshadowed a journey that has now spanned more than a dozen years; and continues from this day. This last Saturday night we were in our living room, soaking, worshipping, and my wife did this painting for some friends of ours. We were listening to John Mark McMillan's song, "He…See More

Hi Joel, Thanks for your blog...I think most of us don't really have a relationship with the Holy Spirit. We talk about Him, but don 't really know Him. The trinity is such a mystery and we try to make it make sense with our human…

"Just Bend"

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was standing in our church building during our Saturday night prayer time when my friend Von came up behind me and simply said, "bend, you just have to bend." That simple word foreshadowed a journey that has now spanned more than a dozen years; and continues from this day.

Declaration of Favor

God has said and I proclaim that I have favor.

I have the favor to overcome any obstacle or difficulty.

I have the favor to break-through.

I have the favor to take my enemies captive.

I have the favor to resist the enemy and make him flee.

I have the favor that breaks the yoke of oppression in my

life and in the lives of all those God connects me with.

I have the favor to take vengeance on the enemy.

I have… Continue

Re-thinking the story of the good samaritan

I started reading a new book a while back, The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus by Brennan Manning and I couldn't make it past the forward where Brennan writes, "God loves you just as much as he loves his son Jesus Christ."

Okay this is something better caught than taught, better felt than tell't so I hope you can catch it afresh...

Brennan mentions John 17:23 where Jesus explicitly says "you love them as much as you love me." Then he goes on to say, "Father, I want… Continue

Reflections on cultivating a relationship with the Holy Spirit, and a critique of language.

I have pondered on and off what it means to “clultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit” – a phrase I first remember hearing several years ago. I think it is key part to understanding how a theology of presence can/should become a life-altering worldview.

If the Holy Spirit is the down-payment guaranteeing our future inheritance, and if the Holy Spirit is the personal presence of the eternal God (Gordon Fee writes that we need to understand and to experience the Spirit as the… Continue

Law or Promise?

In Ephesians 6:2 Paul writes that the sixth commandment is the first commandment with a promise. I certainly don't want to be found arguing with Paul but I'm beginning to think that all 10 commandments could be seen as promises. I'm discovering that in Christ perhaps I can read all of the 10 commandments as God's promises of what he is going to bring to the relationship; wouldn't that be a significant point of freedom?

God says, "You shall have no other gods before me." Can I… Continue

Hi again, Joel.
Just thought I'd give some more info about me and my family. I'm on this journey out of religion and into REAL relationship with Papa. I'm new here, on simplechurch, and hoping to make some connections. My husband is not quite on the same journey/page as I am, but is very supportive and sympathetic to my place, with my departure from religion. I blog about it all the time, just trying to document the process of where Papa's taking me. Hubby (Dennis) reads everything that I write, and every comment made there, so I have to believe that he, too, is being challenged, although he doesn't talk much about it. We have 4 small children, ages 7 to 2, and are currently "unchurching", just detoxing from the religion that has dictated so much of our lives. Papa's showing Himself, in so many real ways. I really appreciate what I've read here, of your writing! Thanks! :)
