This is a call to our state governments to recognize the division of church and state when it comes to marriage and legal unions. The state government is the proper authority to define the rights and obligations of a single household within their state. Therefore, all persons wishing the legal protections of joint ownership and survivorship should apply to the state for whatever civil union the state defines; futher, only the state can dissolve civil unions.
The church is the proper authority to define the rights and obligations of a marriage that is performed within their faith. Only the church can annul a marriage covenant that was broken according to their faith. Marriage is sanctified by God and holds no legal weight in the courts of man. Therefore, a couple married by their church may also file a civil union at the clerk’s office to reserve their rights according to the state.
Freedom of religion is a bedrock principle of the USA. If the government would disentangle itself from defining marriage, they would return the freedom to our citizens to practice marriage according to their own faith and conscience.
