This is a fascinating story, a bit of American history you may not be familiar with. My maternal side of the family trace their begining in America to 1764 and the arrival in Philadelphia of
Laurence Jung from Germany. He married another German immigrant and they began their family living with a colony of other Germans in the 'hinterland' of Pennsylvania. That whole chunk of history is usually left out of our history but was one of the not-to-bright chapters leading up to the American Revolution. I personally was made aware of it through a book called "
Sweet Land of Liberty",by Francis S.Fox.
At the E4Unity Institute we stress all the diverse contributions of the Body of Christ and knowing as much as we can about one another's heritage. In this case, it is a real part of my own heritage which I knew nothing about until rather recently. Like other traditions that I am familiar with, there is a very strong revitalization in progress within to rediscover their story and 'fan the flame' of their branch of the Church. In other words, the IC is becoming stronger, not weaker, and it is definitely here to stay for the foreseeable future. I highly recommend every effort to understand how God is at work in the Lutheran heritage today, not only in America, but around the world.
