Hi, Stephen. Listened to some songs in the list on your page this evening, and was glad to hear a number that were prayer-songs for me in the past. Tonight, my heart longed with the voice in "Hear us from Heaven". Will have to find that box in the storage room where those 90's CD's are waiting to be heard again! Thanks for posting them. They are prayers and testimonies for the Body.
Stephen, I wrote to you on my blog post about "What to do if ..." You might not have seen it before it slid off the site main page. Copied below:
You acknowledge that, "I can be quite impatient. Because of my impatience, I can at times be overzealous." That has been one of my struggles as well -- to be attentive to what God is doing in people's hearts, and giving opportunity for that to be nurtured, rather than trying to accelerate things out of eagerness for His purposes to be promoted. I think, for me, it's been a matter of learning to trust God, rest in Him. But trusting and resting in Him is not being passive toward people, but rather being active in attentiveness, praying, nurturing what seems to be taking root, experimenting by opening doors, being readily available, etc. There are times when there are spurts of seemingly quick progress, and then times of wondering if anything is happening. My wife and I also believe that there is great wisdom and strength in being partnered with others in functioning this way. We had to wait a while (over 2 years!) for that to emerge with the young family with whom we have integrated our lives. The botttom line seems to be that patience is necessary for the right kind of things to develop faster! Staying in that mode is not easy for me either, but God has shared more of Himself with me than I believe would have happened if I was operating more out of my own bright ideas and willing energy. We carry the perspective that God is ALWAYS active toward people to turn their hearts toward Himself, and to bring them into the maturity of Christ, so that He is demonstrated in them. The trick is to let that perspective carry us!
For what this is worth, I'd offer the encouragement to nurture or move within a natural social circle, but invest more in a couple of friendships, and stay for the long haul with them, while at the same time learning to listen to Him and being personally obedient to EVERYTHING that He conveys to you.
Stephen - thanks for sharing your own example. I wonder if you'd put it up as a comment on the blog post itself because it is such a good every day life illustration. I think it would be a great thought provoker for folks.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I have been where you are. Don't think that a home church has to be huge though, I have been meeting with the same 6 - 10 people in our homes for the past 6 years now. We have really got to know one another and minister to one others needs on a very frequent basis. We have become family which is the way it should be I think. We also know other believers who are in other small groups and we get together in larger groups once in awhile.
We are trying to plant more small groups here in the Atlanta area now and we created a website to help support new groups and members and connect us all on the web. I don't know if you took a look at it or not but the site is http://www.icf-atl.info
Feel free to check it out if you like, maybe it will give you some more ideas about how and where you can best serve God.
The idea of a "Simple Church" from the name of this site led to the "Church of One". Got to start somewhere. Loners aren't lost sheep, wandered away from the flock because of physical position from a group attending a church. I've been wandered from God while being a faithfull attendee of church. With God, it's a heart matter but we easily get caught up on the physical aspects of things.
Greetings to you in Jesus powerful name.
Thank you very much for your great encouragement here in the things of God.
I am very happy to make friendship with you by simple church sign up. And good and blessing to have your fellowship. Please encourage and extend your joy with me to take the Gospel to most unreached. Please pray for my Hindu idol worship people to saving Christ. I am very interesting and my vision is for church planting. For this I need some training section for my people to get and make evangelist to send them out for planting. Please pray for it in your schedule.
PS> Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2011.
